PITY THESE ASHES: TULSA 1921 – 2021 Saturday, June 19th, 7:00 PM HarlemStage On Juneteenth, The Harlem Players in partnership with Harlem Stage, The Greene Space at WQXR/WNYC, and the Harlem School of the Arts will present Pity These Ashes: Tusla 1921 -2021, a free digital concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre. The event will feature the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s Tulsa 1921 (Pity These Ashes, Pity This Dust), as well as compositions by Jessie Montgomery, Alice Coltrane, and Trevor Weston with soloists mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges and violinist Jessica (Lady Jess) McJunkins, WQXR host and author Terrance McKnight, and conductor Amadi Azikiwe leading the Harlem Chamber Players. Forbes Jr. leads this celebration—along with special guest Wayne Brady—to recognize the importance of this historic day and to acknowledge the long road still ahead. In addition to music, dance, and commentary, the evening also recognizes contributions made by prominent African Americans today: Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, and Robert F. Her, Unfolding June 13th, 3:00 PM Kente Royal Gallery, 2373 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. ‘Her, Unfolding’ displays the story of a Brown Skin Girl who is grappling with her interior and exterior worlds. The sequence of paintings tells the story of her everyday endurance and vulnerability. Paintings exhibit every nook and corner of her life as she continues to discover herself. The style and details give deeper insight into what it means to be a black/brown woman in the world today. More info
The Protest and the Recuperation June 12 – August 14, 2021 Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery The Protest and The Recuperation is a survey of artistic perspectives on, and responses to, the global phenomenon of mass protest and of recuperative strategies of resistance. The exhibition’s ten artists present nuanced perspectives on the value of protests as aggregate expressions of thousands, even millions, of individual participants through their myriad works focused on protest participation, observation, interpretation, representation, and appropriation.
